GGSIPU holds seminar on human resource
The University School of Management Studies, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIU) organised a day-long seminar called ''HR Forum 2004'' at the Habitat Centre on Friday, October 15, 2004. The forum focused on this years theme, ''HR Practices 2010: Building best Proprietary Intangibles''. The forum was to provide a platform for discussing the emerging expectations from the HR professionals along with contemporary HR issues in the new-age business scenario.
The coordinator of the school, Shalini Garg said: "HR management is undergoing a massive transformation that will change career paths in as yet uncertain ways."
The event started with a talk delivered by Shiv Khera, founder of Qualified Learning Systems, USA.
Among his other endeavours, Khera is the business consultant to organisations like Lufthansa German Airlines, Johnson & Johnson Ltd, Motorola, Nestle, Glaxo Smithkline Beecham (GSK), to name a few. Khera remarked that the basics of human resource management remained the same. Appraisals in themselves cannot achieve anything unless it is an honest give-and-take process.
Khera was of the view that most HR problems in an organisation were attitudinal problems. He said, once this was corrected, it led to a better working environment, which further led to increased team-productivity and maximised the output. He quoted a HR study done at Harvard, which said that 85 per cent of the times a person gets hired was because of a positive problem-solving attitude and the rest might be attributed to his skills and qualifications. According to him, a good resume therefore had to be backed by a good attitude. Degrees and qualifications may help in acquiring the first job but thereafter, it only depends upon the performance of the individual.
The inaugural session was followed by two more sessions. The afternoon session focused on building ''leadership'' and the importance of creating a learning environment in all organisations. V P Singh of the Devyani Group of Industries chaired the session. Other speakers included K K Ahuja, CEO Napino Auto and Electronics Ltd. The speakers at the evening session were Umesh Sharma, VP HR LNJ Bhilwara, GR Industries; Ganesh Dwivedi of Airtel, Uma Arora, HR Daksh, and Balachandran from the Australian Taxation Office.
